In this city — perhaps the most culturally intertwined

one that is as much about aesthetic expression
as it is about cultural momentum.

If you’re able to join us, please let us know in advance.

Studio Introduction

In 2021, in Shinjuku,
a disbanded hardcore musician called together a creative crew —
a final act of youth.
By chance, someone brought a tattoo machine to that gathering.
It was just after Japan’s tattoo court ruling,
and tattoo culture, influenced by global trends, was at its peak.

The following year, SABOTEN TATTOOPARLOR was founded
in Higashi-Nakano.
Initially drawn to American Traditional,
Aioi admired the aesthetic formalism of tattoos,
the immorality of American culture,
and the postmodern appeal of pop art.

Over time, however, he grew disillusioned with the rationalist liberalism
that had come to dominate American contemporary art and tattooing.
His interest shifted toward more avant-garde, personal,
and irrational forms of expression.

In 2023, the studio moved to Minami-Aoyama,
marking a clear turn toward fashion culture and its intersections.
And in 2025, SABOTEN was rebuilt in Akasaka
as one of the largest tattoo studios in Tokyo — over 160 square meters.

Aioi believes that the true core
of cultural movement lies in the underground.
He envisions SABOTEN not merely as a tattoo studio,
but as a cultural crossroads within global TOKYO.

Studio Philosophy

We don’t see the body as just a canvas.

We don’t tattoo to compete in meaning or technique —
we elevate what might be the most valuable thing in this world: nonsense.

Our stance is the opposite of post-Enlightenment interpretations of art,
which attempt to rationalize tattooing.
We tattoo simply to honor the feeling of “I just like it.”

Tattooing originated not from logic
or institutional power,
but as a ritual — outside the boundaries of authority.

Now that this ritual function has faded,
we return it to a new form
of everyday irrationality: style.

Tattoo as adornment. Tattoo as fashion.
In an age with no clear answers,
tattoos become a quiet affirmation
of simply being yourself.

Got any questions?

We are looking forward to meeting everybody!!
